Process is not always a linear progression through time, erasing previous iterations. Repainting features two short series (a set of paintings and a set of prints) through which I explore the themes of permanence and impermanence in the artistic process.
In this series, I explored the act of looking, the catalyst of painting, by creating six portraits of my grandmother based on a single photograph. The more I interacted with the original image, the more it began transitioning from the 3-dimensional figure who is my grandmother to a 2-dimensional assortment of colors and shapes -- defamiliarized. Through this process, I also showcased my own subjectivity, capturing it in the subtle differences between the paintings.
I was also interested in how the painting process itself would change with time and familiarity. What I discovered was an increasingly mechanical process moving through distinct stages and cementing an organically learned pattern.
