Designed and built a steady equilibrium sculpture using found materials.
Collaborators: Charlotte D'Acierno, Colton Peppelman
Role: Concept designer, deconstructed and reconstructed the frame.
Timeline: 1.5 weeks
Approach: The design of the bicycle has solved the problem of balance long ago, so we decided to reintroduce that problem once again. Icarus achieves equilibrium by balancing two wheels and handlebars on a point at the peak of a disentangled frame, using the weight and angle of the handlebars to counter the vertically attached wheel.
Conclusion: The sculpture was successful. While a delicate connection, the wheels balanced on the frame without external assistance. The very identity of the bicycle in flux here. Once a functional, efficient machinery, the bicycle balances its past with its present, a question of evolution and aspiration
