Inspired by traditional Kumeyaay building practices, this project explores the ways in which a system of active bending wood and gabion boulders can respond both programmatically and temporally to external pressures. Collectively-owned winery and research modules frame a public market and encourage community engagement with the region’s winemaking industry. However, as water scarcity in the valley intensifies and the land can no longer sustain the vineyards, the winery production can migrate elsewhere, the roof will erode over time, and only the gabion boulders will remain.
